Dehydration is the excessive loss of water in one’s body, which can
lead to several dangerous disruptions to the body’s natural functions.
Dehydration is especially risky for very young children and the elderly,
which is why it essential one is constantly replacing fluids as they are lost.
If dehydration becomes chronic in the elderly, health complications can become life-threatening--thus, it is essential any and all caregivers or nurses make sure their elderly patients are well taken care of at all times.
Nursing home abuse is a growing epidemic in this country. Sadly, elderly patients who are abused in nursing homes are not likely to speak up for fear of retribution or retaliation, and many of these cases go unnoticed until it is too late.
Common Signs of Dehydration in the Elderly
Dehydration is one of the most common forms of abuse in nursing homes, but requires monitoring of warning signs of increased irritability, headaches, dizziness, loss of appetite, fatigue, dry skin and mouth, deliriousness, etc.
Many health issues are caused by dehydration, including but not limited to:
- Death
- Pneumonia
- Confusion
- Ulcers
- Bed sores
- Disorientation
- Weakness
- Urinary tract infections
- Electrolyte imbalances
Stages of Dehydration Death
In the most extreme cases, dehydration can eventually lead to death. Here are the various phases of dehydration leading to death, as well as the accompanying warning signs you should watch out for to protect your loved one:
Phase 1
The first sign of dehydration is the feeling of thirst. At this point the body begins to conserve water by reducing the amount being sent to the bladder and the amount being sweated out. Accompanying warning signs include: Darker urine, high body temperatures and a fast heart rate.
Phase 2
The body's blood becomes more concentrated due to lack of water and leads to decreased blood flow. The body also begins to overheat. Warning signs include: Dry or shriveled skin, low blood pressure, fainting spells.
Phase 3
In order to maintain proper blood pressure, the body slows the flow of blood to some less vital organs including the kidneys and gut. At this point there are fewer obvious symptoms.
Phase 4
The body will become too overheated to manage and toxins will build up in the body, most likely resulting in kidney failure, leading to death.
